BlueHost SSH Access

BlueHost SSH Access

If you want to log in to your BlueHost server remotely, you will have to use a Secure Shell (SSH) connection. Secure Shell connection enables you to remote logins and secure file transfer on the internet. Your SSH connection is encrypted that is why you can connect securely. With BlueHost’s SSH Secure Shell Access, you can manage and control your SSH keys so you can automate your login process using SSH. As an effective alternative for password authentication, one can use public key authentication.

But before you can setup your SSH Secure Shell access, you need to make sure that you already have an SSH client application ready. For this, using PuTTY is highly recommended which is basically an SSH client and telnet application that both have Linux and Windows version available for download for free.

Requesting For Bluehost Ticket

BlueHost requires users who want to use SSH secure shell access to provide a government issued I.D. that matches the information stated in the cPanel Contact and Billing page. But you can simplify this procedure by updating your contact and billing information. To do so, access your cPanel and go to Preferences section. Make sure that your name and other pertinent information matches with the information you have in your I.D.

Continue to cPanel and click the Security tab and submit a request for SSH/Shell Access. However, although you can and must browse to the file tab where your picture is contained, this is not enough and you must proceed with your BlueHost ticket request. This will lead you to the page where you can attach files to your ticket. Make sure that you attach your I.D. file and picture at this point.

The BlueHost support team is quite responsive when it comes to their tickets. This means that you can quickly get a response for your SSH secure shell access request. In the meantime, you can use another method for setting up your SSH secure shell access. You can disregard the manipulation options and key generations that are found on the same page. This because BlueHost does not need to see your private key which you can generate with a software on your computer.

Setting Up SSH Access

PuTTY is basically an SSH client which is available for both for Linux and Windows although this is more commonly used on Windows systems. By using the SSH key based logins, you will be able to disable the standard login procedure using an assigned username and password. With PuTTY software, even users without a valid public or private key pair can now log into their SSH account. This is also means that your system is safer and more secure.

But first of all, you need to download PuTTY software by going to the download page where you can download the version of its installer. Install the software you can begin the process of generating a public key. After installing it, run the PuTTYgen application and choose the parameters you want or you can use the defaults. You can also change the number bits if you want to that will work with BlueHost and click the Generate button located below the pop up screen.

Wait for the progress bar to reach one hundred percent and other activities start to happen. You will get a code for public which will be pasted into Open SSH authorized key files. Fine-tune the key comment to be having an important effect, probably incorporate your domain or BlueHost account. Leave the date part as it is because it might be helpful someday to remind you the actual date when you first generated the key You also need to provide a unique key passphrase for this step, and make sure you type the same key passphrase in two boxes. Choose a long phrase you can easily remember and can type quickly every time you log into your account.

Save the public key you just generated and create a special directory for storing keys, securely. You can use a thumb drive but make sure you do not corrupt its files or lose it. Pick a name that will reflect the usage of the public key and make sure not to lose these files. There may be reasons to share the key with other platforms other than BlueHost. In addition, you can also save the private key in the same location where you stored your public key. You do not have to upload it to BlueHost and remember not to share that information with anyone.

You can copy the key by pressing ctrl-c and paste it in a text editor that will not wrap long lines. Save the new file under “authorized_keys” and then upload it to your BlueHost server via cPanel web manager or FTP connection. You must save it in the SSH directory located in the root location of your hosting account.
